Family Camp

Family Camp is right around the corner! May 24 to 26th—mark your calendars and be ready for some fun! We will be going to Skyline again this year. There are a lot of activities for everyone including: fishing, canoeing, archery, hayrides, swimming (weather permitting), hiking, biking, campfires, family skits, singing, s’mores, drumming, shelter building and obstacle courses. Families of all sizes and ages are welcome! Registration is online at www.campskyline.org. If you would like a room in Focus Hall register early before they fill up, cabins and tent sites are also available.

Spring Into Giving

For the next three weeks, the Mission Committee will be collecting the following specific household items needed by local refugees and families through St. Vincent Catholic Charities. So please clean out your closets and cupboards and drop your items off in the designated area within Fellowship Hall by Sunday, May 26th. Items needed include: pots and pans (sauce & frying), full-size blankets, twin and full sheets, mops, brooms, alarm clocks, dinner plates, towels (bath, hand and wash cloths), dish towels, bowls (mixing, serving, cereal) and shower curtains. You may also drop off gift cards that can be used to purchase some of these items. Thanks for your support!

Our Congregation’s monthly newsletter, The Grapevine, is available to view and to copy (in color) online. However, if you’d rather have a hard copy (in less flattering black and white), some are available in the literature rack by the south entrance of Fellowship Hall.

  Some of our High School seniors will be preaching; other youth will be leading our worship and music for the morning.

  Phil Henderson will lead the discussion of The Warmth of Other Suns. Special guests will be Jonas Chenault, Ph.D. a native of Detroit. Among other positions, Jonas was, until his retirement, Associate Professor of Education, Urban Counseling Program, MSU. Also with us will be Herman Anderson of Detroit, who was the Civil Rights attorney in Albany, Georgia who helped to free many of the activists in that city's civil rights struggle including Dr. William G Anderson who began the Albany Movement and who subsequently became a professor in MSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine. They will speak to us regarding the great African-American migration to Detroit and Michigan.
12:30 pm Women’s Connection meets Sunday at 12:30 in the Board Room.
  Enjoy fellowship with other women of the church, then lunch provided by Barbara Dorr and Shirley Rumminger. Bettie Senger is our featured speaker, sharing stories of her faith journey and about her daughter's recent wedding in India. Please join us ... no reservation required.

  Interested in a pilgrimage to Iona? Explore one week on the Island to experience the Iona Community, working for peace and social justice, rebuilding of community, and the renewal of worship. Participants will
  1. celebrate living in Christian Community;
  2. find the courage to face the serious issues in our world today;
  3. put faith in God’s goodness at the heart of humanity; and
  4. be thankful for the miracle and wonder of life.
Come and hear more on a proposed 2-week trip to Iona and other parts of Scotland in the early summer of 2014 after Adult Ed at 12:30 pm today in the Chapel for about 20 minutes. Honor John Duley

Our own John Duley is receiving the Distinguished Community Service Award from the East Lansing Educational Foundation on May 9th, 2013 at a dinner from 5:30—9:15 at the Eagle Eye Golf and Athletic Center. The dinner is a benefit to the East Lansing Educational Foundation and is $50 per person. If you are interested in going to honor John, please contact Dorinda VanKempen.

Preview of Sunday, April 28

  • Youth Sunday: Our youth will be leading us in worship.
  • Book Discussion (during the CE hour): Phil Henderson will lead the discussion of The Warmth of Other Suns. An excerpt of the book, interview with the author and New York Times review are available on the table in the church library or linked above.
  • Women’s Connection (12:30 pm): All women are invited to Women’s Connection next Sunday, April 28. We will meet in the Board Room at 12:30 for fellowship and lunch, followed by Bettie Senger's presentation. She will speak about her faith journey and about her daughter's recent marriage in India. Caring for Creation

Please see the April Grapevine for further information. There are two local recycling events in April to dispose of items:

  • Saturday April 27th from 9 am–2 pm in Okemos, at Meridian Mall (north lot) and Farmer's Market. See the Recycling in Meridian Township website for more information.
  • MSU Community ReUse Days: April 22 to 27. 7 am to 3 pm—Monday through Friday, and 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday. They will take any items you have and either resell, reuse or recycle. It is held at the surplus and recycle center off Farm Lane, just north of Mt. Hope.
